With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, thoughts turn to happy marriages of the culinary kind. Sugar and spice make for a wonderfully warm and fragrant partnership which is especially welcome in deep winter.
Express Peking Duck
Sugar, salt, and Chinese five spice (an aromatic blend of cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and peppercorns) come together during cooking to encrust the duck breasts, giving them a depth of sweet and savoury flavour.
To serve, roll thin slices of duck in crepes with hoisin sauce and julienned cucumbers and spring onion. If you prefer not to make the crepes, they can be purchased or tortillas substituted.
Alternatively, eat the duck with the hoisin, cucumbers and spring onions on a bed of hot rice. I love leftovers over a lime-dressed noodle and vegetable salad.

Sweet Potato Spice Cake
For dessert, an incredibly moist cake dotted with toasted pecans and flavoured with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. It is delicious both plain or topped with a crumb topping and served with cream. It is also excellent with a cream cheese frosting.
